What Coolant For 82 GL1100I

Postby patbrandon1 » Fri May 04, 2012 4:24 pm

I had some shopping to do at my local Honda dealer, and bought a few things. The total came up, and I just paid it. I had bought 4 quarts of the Honda HP Coolant Ready-To-Use 50/50 blend. Looked at the receipt when I got home and was surprised to see that they cost $9.42 each. I think $37.68 a gallon is a little steep for coolant. I want to use the best in my bike, but am I being screwed here? I did want a spare of it in case there was a little leak. I got 4 because I am going to do WingAdmin's flush on the cooling system, but maybe not until next spring. The cooling system in my bike works very well and the coolant was new in the fall.

What brand coolant do you use?

50/50 NON-SILICATE.It mut be silicate free. The water pump seals do not like silicates.Just buy a quality brand name.Regards,Johnyy

Was silica free installed from the factory when the bike was built?

I use Prestone 50/50, $15 or whatever from Wallyworld. I too balked at the price ($7.42CDN, if memory serves) for the Honda premix at the local dealer.

Owners manual states to use "Safe for Aluminum" coolant.
See http://www.goldwingworld.com/pdffiles/Honda-GL1100-Aspencade-1982-Owners-Manual.pdf

The Factory service manual that sits in my garage is even less specific, saying only to use ethylene glycol and water, 50/50 mix.

Where did you see the "silica free" specification?

Super Tech 50/50 sold at Wal-Mart for $7.97/gal .. safe for all aluminum engines. Have used it for several years with no issues.

I used standard Prestone silicate-free coolant marked as safe for aluminum engines in my 1100. A few months later the water pump in my 1100 failed. Coincidence? Perhaps.

I now use the Honda coolant, which I get from Cyclemax for $7 a quart. $28 is less than two tanks of gas. My bike was expensive, I don't feel the need to save a few dollars on using cheap fluids.

Every 2-3 years or so. Depends on how many miles I put on it, too.

I doubt that honda makes their own coolant. Anyone know who the oem is for the honda coolant?

Most car/bike manufacturers sell their "OEM" oil, coolant, wipers, whatever, but the products are actually manufactured by whomever gives them the lowest bid for an acceptable product.

So you might be able to find out who makes their coolant now, but a year from now it might be a different manufacturer again. The bottle will still be the same of course, and you can bet that whatever specs it is being made to is what Honda specifies for their application.

That said, the OEM Honda products tend to be of very high quality; so much so that many owners of other brands of bikes use Honda OEM products. The Honda Moly grease is very widely used amongst BMW bike owners as well.

I was at canadian tire tonight. The only product to mention aluminum radiators was the GM dexron grade of coolant. Reccomended for "GM vehicles and any other vehicle with an aluminum radiator". It is also silicate free.

Is that what I should buy if I'm hell bent not to buy honda?

As long as it says silicate free. I use silicate free from NAPA.
