Fork rebuild... what oil from factory??

Postby Latitude42 » Tue May 08, 2012 9:38 am

I just ordered the parts,"seal kits and the 4 bushings" to rebuild the forks on my 82 aspy... the left fork started bleading so while I had them apart I figured I should just do the seals and bushings all at once...
Question though... what weight fork oil did the factory use???? and how much.....

I had heard that some use trany fluid, but how do you know what weight that is???
Thanks

The official Honda service manual actually says to use automatic transmission fluid, which is about 10 weight.

The capacity (after draining) is:

1980-1981: 220cc (7.4 oz)
1982-1983: 270cc (9.1 oz)

Don't overfill, or you'll blow out seals and end up having to do it again.

To tell you the truth...to me, 10 weight oil is a bit too thin for the front forks of an 1100. When I did mine, I didn't use ATF at all, I instead used standard 15 weight fork oil. It firmed the front end up and improved the handling noticeably, and got rid of a lot of the dive.

If you're going to go with ATF, the general consensus is that Honda meant Dexron ATF.
