Neutral light

Postby curt-51 » Wed Feb 03, 2010 12:51 pm

The neutral light is on at all times on my 81 Goldwing. I have been told that the switch is internal. According to the manual I have, it is external. Could someone please clarify? Thanks Curt

It's inside the front engine cover, next to the water pump:

You can see it on step 74 here: How to remove and replace your water pump

That said, it might not be the neutral switch. It could be the wire going to the neutral switch. If the wire gets chafed and grounds out against the frame or engine, it will cause the neutral light to come on all the time.

I believe the photo is an 82 or 83. The 81 neutral switch is on the right side of the engine aft of the oil filter and almost hidden by the frame.

You're right, that is an 82. I wasn't aware the 81 was different. I don't see it in the parts catalog I have, although I might just not be looking in the right place.

Thanks for the input. I'll check it out this weekend.
