Can I just add a quick note?
As our Wings age the baffles start getting packed and the exhaust gets louder. I replaced my baffles and cannot hear the exhaust at all at 55-60mph, and barely hear it at 70-mph. This makes quite a difference in the acceptance of higher rpms.

I just got a 83 and it high rpm at 55 but it's normal but you can lower your rpms by changing the gear in the rear like a car but you lose power as well

One thing to consider, in addition to the already mentioned speedo and tach errors, is the outside diameter of the tires. This can be different even with the same spec, ie 120/90-18. The 18 is the rim diameter not the outside and the 90 aspect ratio is rounded to the nearest 0 or 5. Each tire model profile/shape is slightly different

I’ll bet that any GL1100 running today is running on different tires than the originals. The info I’ve read said the ‘83 should spin 3300rpm at 60mph (given the original tires’ dimensions) down from 3600 in ‘82. This was a common performance spec listed on magazine road tests.

Remember, the national speed limit was 55mph back then, and up thru ‘82 the speedo could read only 85mph with a special indication at 55mph. In ‘83 the law changed so the speedo could read higher but still indicated 55mph.

When I got mine in 2013, I put on Dunlop D404’s and I saw 3700rpm at 60mph. This year I put on Avon Cobras and now I see about 4000 at 60! What used to be 5000rpm @ 80mph is now 5000 @ 75. Nothing else was changed. I don’t know if the front tire diameter is larger and the speedo reads lower than before or maybe the rear tire diameter is smaller so the engine revs higher or maybe both happened!

Some tire specs include the outside diameter, some include the revs per mile. You need to compare these numbers to know what change to expect.

Ride safe.

also .... how did you replace the baffles?
The original mufflers are sealed....and the shop manual does not include this procedure.
