restoring 82 gl 1100 interstate

Postby robertket » Tue May 29, 2012 8:58 pm

I recently acquired a 1982 gl 1100 goldwing that has been sitting in a storage building since 1993 i have removed the carbs and intake to find that the gasoline that was in the tank had leaked down into the cylinders over the years and has obviouusly locked the motor up. my question is do you think it would be able to be taken apart and cleaned and possibly reassembled. this cycle had less than 30k miles on it when parked and i am thinking that it has very little cylinder wear and am hoping to get it running without breaking the bank. Any suggestions will be greatly appreiciated. P.S. I am pretty mechanically inclined (custom metal fabricator) but am not versed in engine mechanics/rebuilding.

Remove plugs and drain oil, Does it turn over or is it more than hydrolocked?

If crankcase is full of gas ( varnish after 19years) but still turns, you are in luck. Then becomes a matter of flushing the case and passageways and then replenishing.

If draining chocolate sauce and water from the case then internal corrosion is expected. It may not be the treasure you hoped. If it runs at all expect the bearings will be troublesome and may not hold oil pressure.

If after draining it Still does not turn over by hand, then there is more to this that removing the heads may reveal.
