Maintenance while engine out

Postby bcnv1100 » Thu May 31, 2012 4:22 pm

Hey all, i'm going to be moving an engine from one bike to another and was wondering what kind of things would be good to look at/change/do, since i'll have the engine out. It runs on the bike its in now and the only problems i see are: leaks oil while the bike is running, neutral light stays on,and the PO wired the fan somehow so if the bikes on the fan is always on. The old bike is pretty basic not even bags but the new one is decked out and i want to get anything that needs checked before its hidden on the new one, THANKS

"leaks oil while the bike is running"
you better identify where it's leaking from and fix it.
Don't forget that it can come from a weep hole under the water pump area(bad pump bearings).

"neutral light stays on"
if it's a early year model, the neutral switch is bolted into the lower right front area.Pull it out and clean it.Might as well pull the oil pickup screen too and flush it out. It's behind a cover just behind the switch.

"fan is always on"
Look at replacing the fan switch. It's right in the same housing as the thermostat your going to replace.

And by all means...REPLACE the timing belts.

Thanks, its an 81 1100, already did the timing belts on the new engine, and i'll have the old one that i might be able to swap some parts off of it, the PO took it out and sold me the bike bc it kept fouling the plugs and he couldnt figure out why, i'm no mechanic so not sure about it.

Do a compression test on all cylinders. The ideal results are around 170 PSI on the gauge with the throttles held wide open and the test is done roughly at sea level. The pulse generator device can get rusty and lock up so its a good time to double check it.
