I'm planning to go tomorrow and pay $300.00 for a 1980GL 1100 interstate.It really looks nice no dings or scratches.My problem it's been sitting in a barn for 3yrs .He said the last time he rode it he noticed a mixture of gas and oil coming out around the clutch lever on the motor.I know nothing about Goldwings,but in the last 45yrs i've owned alittle bit of everthing.This sounds like the carbs flooded gas into the crankcase,but why would it leak out around the clutch arm.
We put the battery on a charger,and i'm going over tomorrow to see if the motor will even turn over.With the overall good shape of the bike if it's a bad motor i figure i could recoup my money parting it out .It has all the bells & whistles.
So what do you guys think.

Before you turn the motor over REMOVE THE SPARK PLUGS. If you don't, and the cylinders are full of gas, it will hydro-lock and bend a rod. It sounds like the carbs need to be rebuilt. Sounds like the float valves are sticking. That will cause gas to fill up the crankcase. Crankcase over fills and comes out of any and all orifices. The seals could have dried out and shrank, causing the leaks. If it's been sitting out in a barn for 3 years, I'll bet the pistons and rings have rusted up a bit. This may cause the motor not to turn over very easily or not at all. The price is pretty good for what you have. I suggest draining the oil and replacing the oil and filter. Spray PB Blaster in all the cylinders and let them sit a couple days. Put the bike on the center stand and in high gear. Try to turn the back tire to see if the motor spins. Might have to spray the cylinders every day and rock the wheel. Or turn the motor over with a wrench. If the rings are stuck and you hit the starter, you could cause some damage. Take your time and do things right, you might get it running for little money. Rush and tear things up and it costs more. Post your questions here and results as you go and we can help you get it into better shape.

Thanks for the reply Seabee.I'll take it slow.I have more time than money.I was kinda disapointed the guy had already started taking stuff off the bike planning to pull the motor.Mainly radiator, crash bars,fake gas tank.He didn't get to far and i'm glad.I don't like basket cases.I like to tear things down myself.I'll keep you posted.Thanks agian

I think its a steal 300 wow! wish I could find one!

You cant loose at that price the parts have to be worth 5 times that much!

bought an 83 gl1100 A for $300.00 last year in the next state over.worked on it long enough to determine it had a carb problem.left it in Mn. at my brothers house.with the gas on over the winter no winter prep was done. oops! 5 months later, oil filter ran out clear /drain plug--2 &1/2 gals gas. over the winter she droped , pushed out all of the oil & some gas.so ? this is my first wing & post, also this is the first post I've seen with the same problem. tomorrow I'm going to drain the anty-freeze and find its freeze point. volume .and start from there. maybe you can tell me you're out-come.for now I'm thinking biggest problem is still CARBS!!
