traded one problem for another (tach)

Postby oldgold82 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:04 pm

So I had a carb problem and partially removed my carbs to clean the slides. I put my bike back together so I could test it and it ran fine, in fact it ran great. But now my tach doesn't work. It worked fine before I tore into it and now it doesn't do anything. Did I bump something somewhere? All other gauges work except tach. Anybody have any idea where I should look/check?

The tach is pretty simple, because it's mechanical. Unscrew the cable from the back of the tachometer, start the engine, and see if the cable is turning. If it is, you may have a problem with the tach itself. If not, unscrew the other end of the cable (it's connected right in front and to the left of the fuel pump, on the back of the right head) and see if the drive is turning. Chances are you've either loosened something, or broken the tach cable.

If you're replacing the tach cable, make sure you take note of the routing, so that you route the replacement cable the same way.

Is this a aspy or a interstate? the interstate is cable driven from the right side of the engine, right off the fuel pump mount.I'm not sure about the aspy if it's electronic or not.If it is,then look for a disconnected wire near the ECM module.

Its an interstate and mechanical. I hope I didn't break the cable moving the carbs around.

They're not that expensive. Cyclemax has new ones available for $15: http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com ... A=769&B=35

Is this something that breaks somewhat often?

Virtually never. A new one should last 10+ years, depending on mileage. Some can last the life of the bike. When they do break, it's typically due to movement/manipulation during maintenance.
