Possible. The lamps are over 30 years old.
Or you lost volts on the brown wire that feeds them.Remember it is 30 year old wiring too.

I have sorta the same problem with my '86 GL1200 digital dash. My question is:...How the HECK do you get at them to replace them? Do you really have to remove all the plastic, windshield, mirrors, etc. to get at them?

I found out on my GL1100 that you have to remove both gauges and then you will have access to lights

Yes,all that stuff has to come off, including the head light. There's 4 10mm nuts that hold the cluster in.
Also on my 1200 when the backlights quit,I found corroded connections in the faring plug causing the problem.Have a look at this post...http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11905

just reseating connector with cleaning contacts fixed the issue for panel back lights

Good that there working...Now you know what to look for when other problems crop up.
Can we assume that the 3 yellow stator wires next to the battery have been cut and soldered together?????

I don't think they are soldered, I will do that tomorrow after I get some heat shrinkable tubing.

Currently taped together
