82 GL1100 Aspencade NO brake lights, but flashers work

Postby wndoguy » Thu Jun 21, 2012 11:43 am

I had the rear end apart to put a new tire on, new progressive shocks, serviced everything I could, but now that it's all back together, I have no brake lights. Front or back. I have tried by-passing the switches by connecting the leads. Nothing. I have tried changingg the fuse, but my flashers work, just not my brake lights. I have followed the wires as best I could, and nothing seems to be damaged. As I don't have a compressor on board any longer, I have one green lead down by the rear master cylinder, and one green lead under the false gas tank. Would you think these need to be grounded? I didn't try that. While waiting for the miracle answer, I will go try that. Thanks for looking!

Do you have tail lights? If yes, that would suggest you have a ground? If neither the front or rear brake switches make the brake light come on, I would suspect a bad connection in the wiring between the bulb and the switches.. I would be using my multimeter to check for continuity from the bulb back to the switches..

I don't have a Ohm meter where I am right now. And even if I did, I don't know if I would know what to do with it.
I may be able to pick one up this weekend while away, but like I said, not sure what to do.

I do have tail lights, head light and flashers work, just not brake lights. Now having said all this, I could have been driving like this for a while, and only noticed it now when working on the rear end.

Everything seems fine, with exception to the brake lights.

I may be stating the obvious, but the bulb does work? You don't have a blown brake light bulb? If the bulb is good, then it has to be a wiring problem for the one wire that connects the brake bulb to the switches.. I would be checking all the plugs that you undid, and making sure they have made a good connection when you reconnected them. Maybe try a new bulb first just to be sure the bulb is good then check the wiring. I do not have a wiring diagram for your bike, otherwise I could tell you what color the wire is that you need to check. Hopefully someone else can tell you that.

I have an 82 Aspy and a book with wire diagrams. If this is still a problem PM me and I'll do what I can to get you the diagram.

I just recently fix a right turn issue, it was in the wire connection behind the removable panel in the lower part of the right bag. remove the screws the the ass'y connection are in there.

Jiggle your ignition key before going to far. You may have had this problem before working on the bike and didn't notice it. Sometimes the ignition contacts get dirty and you need to jiggle to get things working. I had the brake light problem with my 1983 and no fairing power on my 1982 because of this. I prefer no fairing power vs no brake lights.
