Handlebar shimmy

Postby goldminerusa » Sun Jun 24, 2012 7:45 pm

Have noticed a slight shimmy in the bar at 45 mph and above, and especially noticeable when i`m riding one handed. Have also discovered a loud thunk at all speeds when riding through small bumps, potholes, manhole covers etc. Am wondering if one problem is causing both results. My theory is loose, worn or dry steering head bearings / Wheel bearings. I`ll almost guarantee they`ve never been looked at after all the other problems with this bike, an 82 1100 S.

Start from scratch, assume nothing and go over the entire front end.
Bearings(steering and wheel) , slides, seals, oil, springs in the forks, alignment and all the bolts and nuts properly torqued.

Also tire cupping can cause shaking issues. The thunk maybe your fork springs bottoming out due to low air or oil, old springs or all three. Any oil on your fork tubes? does the bike sit down on the forks when you sit on it and pop up as you get off...= bad springs, air or low oil. If you raise the front wheel..use a jack and have someone help hold the bike, and turn the wheel with no pressure eon it do you feel a notch or is the action very smooth..notch = worn bearing that have a low spot on the race or bearings.

Just some things to check to ID the issues.

Thanks guys. Went thru the front suspension a few weeks ago and i know thats OK. Ditto the brakes. You both hit on my area of suspicion, the bearings, wheel and fork. The tire isn`t cupping but is losing air regularly, was thinking of running on it for the season, but will change it because its date coded 4/04, a metzeler 880. Will post my findings when fixed.

I only get a shimmy on my 83 when the front pressure is low in the forks and the tire .

Funny you should write that. I did have to put air in the tire once on the road. Will check the forks tomorrow though. Thanks for the tip.
