Idle mixture screw caps, remove on bike?

Postby bbells » Tue Jun 26, 2012 9:13 am

My 82 GL1100 carbs still have the factory set idle mixture screws with the tabs blocking any adjustment. I was wondering if anyone has successfully cut the tab off their idle mixture screws while the carbs were on the bike. And if so, how did you do it and what tool did you use? I would like to wait until winter to take the carbs off, but will do it now if there is no way to cut that tab off of the idle mixture screw while the carbs are on the bike. Thanks for any help!

On one set,I cut them off with a pair of side cutters,on another, just a bit of heat loosened the glue and they pulled off.

Were you able to do this while the carbs were on the bike? Thanks!

Didn't try.I completely serviced the carb on the bench.6 hours of scraping and polishing then 3 more to put back and sync.

when i was rebuilding my carbs on bench i used propane torch and they came right off-might look for small torch at harbor freight-didnt take much heat to remove them

It looks kind of like I could reach in there with a cutting blade on a dremel motortool after taking the air tubes off and cut off the tabs. Looks relatively easy to do. But, I have learned in the past that something that looks relatively easy to do is often a disaster when I do it.

the caps are glued on over the adjuster-if you cut them, you are going to have to replace the whole idle screw-you might have luck removing the intake manifolds and trying to twist them off-need something to spray on that would loosen the glue-needle is made of brass and seems to be pretty tough but would probably break just below the cap, its kind of thin in that area-removing carbs can be tough, but it might be better plan in long run.

I meant cutting the tab off, not the cap.

dumb me- i realized later that is what you meant-i think it would work-if you are just adjusting carb-if you take out idle screw watch out for metal washer and o ring-good luck

Solution: With the carbs on the bike I put a soldering gun on each cap for 2 minutes and they all slide right off. I first tried using a screwdriver, but a small long snouted vice grip worked the best. If you do this and you need to use force you didn't heat it enough.
