1983 GL1100I Leaking antifreeze from Plug #1

Postby WeaselSr » Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:48 pm

I have a 1983 GL1100I (Interstate) and had to rebuild engine. I have it back together now but if I put antifreeze thru the radiator cap I see fluid coming out of the bottom near where the exhaust is. If I close raditor cap very little if any fluid comes out. Is this normal or am I not to fill raditor this way?

Thanks,

WeaselSr.

Is it the left side as you sit on the bike . If it is its the weep hole for the water pump most of the time its the seal between the water pump and the oil pump . the worst case is the water pump is bad and needs to be changed out .

no it is the right side as you sit on the bike. if I start the bike with the radiator cap on there is just a little leak, but if i open the radiator cap antifreeze will leak out of spark plug #1. I have plenty of fluid in the reserve tank.

Did you have the heads off when you rebuilt it . If so maybe you missed putting in one of the water connectors apart from that i cant think of any thing else .

Yes. I had to remove the head and replaced all that I could remember even replacing the gasket twice. I will put the rest together and try again. There is still anti freeze in the reserve. So not sure where it is coming from. Thanks for all your help.

I have encountered this problem before. If you installed new head gasket check the torke on the head bolts. More than likely the heads are not seated with enough torke and water is leaking from the head gasket.

Got it fixed. I seems the Old Gasket for the Head WAS OLD. Replaced Gasket and it is OK. Thanks for all the help. Great words for any fix that I need. Maybe later I will let you now about the GL1200 that I got and has been sittng for a couple of years but will not start. At least it turns over.
Thanks again.
