Won't Turnover (sometimes)

Postby dan hefta » Thu Jun 28, 2012 7:11 am

Hi All,

I have a weird issue with my 1983 GL1100 and am looking for some advise. I have only owned the bike for a few months now and once in a while it wont start... At first I thought it was the battery (NOT)... Then I figured it was the starter, so I replaced it and all was cool... Then it happened again, the engine turns over once then it seems to lock up... I found that leaving the bike in gear and rocking it back and forth frees it up and she fires right up. What do you think is the issue?

I'm gonna guess that your not turning off the gas when you park it for the night.
Once in a while,a bit of fuel seeps past the float valve and gets into the cylinder.
It's called "hydro-lock" and rocking the engine back and forth moves the gas out of the cylinder.
I'll bet a nickel that when it happens again, the bike is on the side stand, left over night and if you pull the 2 left plugs out...bump the starter with the kill switch off(no spark)..it will shoot gas out of one hole.

Get in the habit of turning off the fuel for the night. These bikes don't have a "auto" fuel shutoff.Honda put on the fuel lever for a reason.

Yes  I actually thought of that being the issue, now I know it is... It only does it if the bike sits for a long time. Thanks again!!!!!!!!

I will make it my new ritual to turn off the gas.
