Replace Plug Wires

Postby blake99 » Sat Jun 30, 2012 6:26 pm

Riding in the rain, bike started to miss. Replaces wires (copper core), caps NGK XD05FP and plugs, NGK DR8ESL. Replace one at a time, started bike, now have a back fire on left bank. Any suggestions? Thanks

Did you install them in the proper location? If two are crossed out of order you can get the backfire.
Oops. Re read your post and saw you replaced one for one.

Just checking, but are the drain holes in the plug wells clear? You can push a coat hanger down through them to ensure they are open. If it's dry that shouldn't have an effect, of course, particularly with new plugs/caps/wires.

Do you know which cylinder is backfiring, or is it BOTH on the left side?

Thank you for the quick reply. Drain holes are clear. Can't tell which cylinder is missing, pulled both plugs and they were dry and looked the same. Except for the missing in the rain (wires were only 31 years old) which started all of this, the bike ran fine.

Rechecked all connections, did not find anything wrong, however the miss is now gone. Running great now. Thanks for your help.

Could be that by checking the connections you fixed the problem. May have beem a loose connection somewhere.

Where did you find your plug wires and boots at? I'm finishing up a "brought back to life" project of one that has sat for 12 years and I know my grandfather never replaced them so they are roughly 32 years old now lol. It runs good but I wanna do as much tune up as I can while I'm doin the work on it.

I got the boots (NGK XD05FP, part # 8641) at Amazon.com for $2.99 each. The wire came from O'Reilly auto parts (copper core, $0.80 / foot), however any bike shop would have the wire.

I bought 7 foot of wire and had about 6 inches left over.

NGK plug caps have a 5k ohm resistor built in. Goldwings come with copper core wires and resistor caps from Honda. If they are original you may still be able to see the NGK part number on them, mine had them. On the replacement caps, carefully grind off the NGK raised logo on the side so they will seal better in the rubber boots.

Correct 7mm, I forgot to add the size. There is 8mm out there, however it will not fit in the coils.
