'83 Aspy Rich and Backfire

Hey all. I always get good advice on this forum. So here's another inquiry. I have recently rebiult my carbs. I cleaned and cleaned until I am certain everything is spotless inside. My issues are a raw gas smell down the highway, and after the bike gets to operating temp, a very low, soft "backfire" when coming off the line. The bike does very well between 1200-5500 RPM, but above that, it hesitates. Carbs are sync'ed within 1". It idles @ 960 right after it comes off the choke, but after getting up to temp, it goes up to 1250-1300. Help!!

Have you checked for a vacuum leak? The fast idle after it warms up sounds like you may have a vacuum leak around the carbs or intakes.
