Postby redwingrider » Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:42 am

I have an 82 gl1100 interstate...fairly new timing belts(apx 6 thousand miles on them) fairly new spark plugs, adjusted the valves about a month ago, and my bike ran awesome, right up till the time i shut it down last night after a great day of riding. went out to start her up and it sounder clanky and afful, like no spark..not even close to firing up...can anybody give me a clue to what to looki for before i tear it apart...
please and thanks

Clanky is generally not a good sound.

First thing I would do is check for compression on all four cylinders. If you don't have a compression tester, pull each spark plug out, moisten your finger, and press it over the hole, then crank the engine and make sure you can feel it making pressure - on ALL the cylinders.

i Check for spark first, pull one plug and ground the body, start the motor and see if you have or have not got spark. Then check resistance of the sparkplug wires and coils. Use your service manual troubleshooting guides.

Aha, low battery as a result of not being charged. When you said "clanky" I was worried that you had broken a timing belt, which is why I wanted to have you check compression.

I pulled the plugs on the right side, put my finger over the hole, great compression, and noticed no weird sounds so i put the 2 spark plugs back in and it ran sweet,,,for about 43 miles then.BOOM, white smoke from the right bank. Head gasket......about 2 weeks before this, during start up, it sounded like one of the carbs took a minute to fire up (one of the signs of the gasket going). there was never a smell of antifreeze and my lvl was good..Anyways....My wing is apart and waiting on my gaskets and o-rings(for both heads)..Once again i want to thank everybody that responds to our needs of help..as i have used this sight several times with amazing results..
