Have a second steed in the garage - '82 Goldwing Aspencade

Postby Spamcan » Thu Jul 05, 2012 1:47 am

The brother of fellow rider sold me his '82 Honda GW Aspencade 1100 last weekend. It's been idle in his garage for 3 years. It's got @ 96k miles on it, some minor cosmetics to take care of (some minor cracking on the fascia and cleanup of the dirt and oil) and need to replace the bent handlebars. Probably needs a valve job too, I get a knocking on the left side when under load - like bad gas knocking. Also after removing the side panels, the left side has quite a bit of gummed up oil and dirt on the engine and on initial start some smoke comes out down there (while cold). And I've noticed a bit of soot in the exhaust pipes. Though it runs fairly well and all electronics work (except the horn, and the right yellow marker light housing on the front lower "scoop" is broken (low and just behind the front wheel, so far I can't find a replacement, maybe I don't know the name of it).

Some things I've gotta find: paper versions of the shop manual and/or Chilton-type books. New floor boards and shifter - they're kinda flopping around and the bushing at the pivot of the shifter is way loose (labeled "Triple A"). Replacement light housing for that front scoop light described above.

Some other things I'm gonna do: spark plugs, brake pads, timing belts, all fluids changed (is this a wet clutch bike, and best oil?), maybe a battery and maybe even pull the rear and lube the shaft. I'll probably also replace all marker/turn signals with LED's. I could also use help in finding the color code, or paint, of the white/pearl color. That's the color I'll need to do some touch-up's on and ColorRite doesn't go back farther than '86.

If anyone's got some tips, tricks, info, etc, please pass them along. This is my first GW and was hoping to get a better 2-up cruiser than my Suzuki C50, so I hope to get this one in shape and enjoy the ride. Looking forward to all this.

Thanks Wally. I've already learned a lot about GW's with other posts and docs here. I sure appreciate any assistance.

Have not seen Randakk's yet, looks like a great resource. Love that restored GL1000 engine...that's how I want mine - of course... ;) Thanks for sharing!

You're welcome. I see you are in Poulsbo, I spent many years in Silverdale and Tahuya. Would love to be back there.

I would gladly take 70 over the 100 degree with high humidity we're having here. Not very enjoyable for riding.
