Mine did that just before it quit altogether. MIne turned out to be the plastic drive gear in the wheel stripped because the cable was too tight. If your speedo cable hasn't been serviced this may be what is happening to yours now.

your speedo cable is about to break, and it mat ruin the plastic drive at the same time.
take the inner cable out , and you might be able to lube it , thus saving everything.

If the speedo cable breaks that will save the drive gear but the drive gear looks to be the sacrificial link in the system. It's certainly the cheapest part but not the quickest to change. If the speedo cable becomes tight it will just stop turning stop the driven gear inside the wheel. That gear is metal. The plastic one is driven directly by the wheel. You'll have a couple of revolutions before the metal driven gear, that has now stopped, chews up the teeth on the plastic.

To clean; take cable off the wheel end, pull cable out..clean it off lube it up, spray some cleaner in the drive unit to clean it out..spray some lube in the drive unit..reinsert cable in the tube..may be good to go.

On my 1500 it took about 10 minutes to fully remove the cable from the bike. I needed pliers to pull the cable out of the sheath. I cleaned the cable but couldn't push it back in easily. Found that the sheath was blocked with rust and dirt. Filled it with solvent and let it sit. Drained out a bunch of crap. Did this again a few times and then blew it out with air. Lubed the cable with some very expensive grease I got from work (Krytox). Turns silky smooth now.

I had the same problem, but mine was making a lot of noise too. First I replaced the speedo cable. Didn't fix it. Then I replaced the speedometer drive unit at the front wheel. Still didn't fix it. Finally, I realized that it was the speedometer itself. I found a used on on Ebay and once I put the new speedo in, it fixed the problem.

If you could, please post a step-by-step how to on this. I don't want to pull the wrong cable.

Right now mine (1994 GL 1500) is bouncing on the lower speeds below 40 Km/h.

Thanks

There's really not much to include in a step-by-step. If you remove the speedometer cable (unscrew it with the screw at the bottom, unscrew the knurled collar at the top), you'll see a flat metal part inside of it. This part actually spins inside the cable sheath, transferring rotation from the wheel to the speedometer. This part can be pulled out of the sheath, so that it (and the sheath) can be cleaned and relubricated.

Thanks for the reply.

Haven't taken anything apart on the front wheel or forward console in the 9 months I have owned the Wing. Where do I find the speedo control box or the cable everyone is talking about?

Follow steps 1-10 on this how-to to remove the bottom end:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=11203

Steps 21-22 on this how-to shows the top end of the cable:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10998

You'll likely want to go at the top end from below, which means you'll need to remove the under covers, shown in steps 23-25 here:

ooooops!

It's late, folks. Ignore my previous message, where I show very succinctly how to remove the speedometer cable from a GL1500!!

The GL1100 is easier. The whole process is detailed here: How to replace your speedometer cable

My fault. I didn't realize that this was a GL1100 topic in my orginal post. I blindly did a search on the subject of speedometer and wasn't paying attention to the model. I take full responsibility for messing things up. But thank you kindly for your help on this.

Do I really need to hoist the front of the Wing for this? Can I not go from steps 3-10 instead?

Yes - that's a "remove front wheel" tutorial, so that's why it's having you lift the front end. You can skip that.
