Can I add 36 watts to stock system?

Postby bbells » Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:55 pm

82 Aspencade. I have the stock headlight, tail light, running light combo. Can I add an amp that uses 36 watts max without over taxing the stator? And yes, I know for sure it is 36 watts wax that the amp needs. The radio won't be on when the amp is on, but all the usual lights will be. I have searched, and found that the system puts out about 300 watts at 5000 rpms which should be adequate, but I don't know if this additional load will harm the charging system when at lower rpms. Thanks for any help.

You should have no problems with your plans to draw 36 more watts , there should be about 70-80 wattsavailiable after the stock systems draw what they need to run the bike. Before I did the car alternator conversion I was able to run heated grips and heated vest or 2 35 watt driving lights. If you need to free up some watts for more add ons then you should change your 1157 and 1156 bulbs to LEDs 8-)

When you decide that the stock charging system still doesnt give you enough power because you have decided to add even more lights and other electrical goodies give me a shout and I will tell you how to mount a car alternator to your engine to give you 750watts or 55amps of power. 8-)

I am kind of looking forward to doing that. But, my wife says I should buy something newer, and a neighbor has a 1500 he wants to sell this winter. But, I certainly like the 1100 more than the 1200. So, not sure if I will do it.
