Post by mcbrayer3rd » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:40 am

Just replaced my seals, all went good.
Drove about 1000 miles. now one of them is leaking.
I'm guessing maybe spring are wore out. Any clues.

oil leaks on a fork is hard to determine why,but the springs shouldn't have any affect on them.
I can only point you at a few things to look at.
My 84 had one fork leaking also.It turned out to be the seal.
First thing...lift the dust cap up and verify that in fact there is oil gotten past the seal.
If there's a lot of oil in there, then obviously, for some reason the seal is not doing it's job.

Possible causes....
pitting or scratches in the chrome....Small pits will hold oil till they pass the lip of the seal and then get deposited on top of the seal on the return stroke.
NOTE:pits can be cleaned and filled with JB Weld and sanded smooth to get you by.
A defective seal or the seal installed upside down....Yes it can happen...don't ask.
A very badly worn upper bushing allowing the tube to move past the flex point of the seal.
Not likely cause I'm sure you checked them before you put it back together.
Way too much oil put in the fork.
Way too much air pressure in the forks.I run about 4psi when on the center stand.
