1980 GL1100 missing at 3,000-3,500 rpms

Postby tkbelleau » Tue Jul 17, 2012 3:41 pm

I bought a 1980 GL 1100 interstate will 40,000 miles.
I have gone through it to clean it up and cleared up almost all of the carb issues. It had been running rough at all RPMS so I started to do the normal checks to fix the problem.
I have cleaned the jets, checked the gaps on the valves, changed the gas and used sea foam. The last move I made was cleaning the small jets and removing the gas cap. I believe the cap is bad and I may need a new one. Anyway the last ride was great. Lots of power and smooth running engine. I have not synced the carbs yet.
Only problem was the engine started missing/hesitating at 3,000-3,500 rpms. Any ideas on this one?
Thanks

Only in that range? does it smooth out above that?

This can be caused by one sticking slide.
A down the plenum look with a mirror, rap the throttle and verify at the slides have action.
It can also be spark....A night time view of uncovered ignition caps for sparking will tell.
A weak coil. The spark falls off at a high rpm.
This can be seen by running on 3 cylinders and a spare plug on one coil pack at a time.Hit the rpm and look at the spark.
Don't overlook valve adjustments, mechanical ignition advance and the supplemental vacuum advance system too
When everything is right, that bike will separate your shoulder joints from a idle to red line.Been there, rode that.

It is smooth at all other rpms except for 3000-3500. I will do the other checks you suggest and get back to you. Thanks
