Alternator conversion

Postby old wingman » Sun Jul 22, 2012 12:10 am

I've been thinking about the alt. conversion for my 83 Interstate GL 1100. Read all the stuff I can find and most of the posts talk about using flat belts with five grooves and the like, my thought is using a V groove pulley of the desired diameter (3.5-4 in.) instead of the wider stuff. A V groove belt is only a half an inch wide with the pulley not being much wider and will do the job. The reason being is radiator issues with clearance, so the thinner the better. It should be real easy to whip up a crank pulley and alt. pulley
on my lathe. What do you guy's think?

Old Wingman, I must say that I made a decision to go with the Alt. Conversion because Todd said I would like it, guess what...14 volts at idle is what I like about it..Built in regulator is also what I like about it, 55 amps of power and a simple fix if your alternator ever fails, I carry an extra one with a extra belt, I am no longer the slightest bit concerned with my electrical system failing on a long trip....I have my back up plan..Mr. Don Piggot did a brilliant thing coming up with this..Good luck and I hope you document the making of your pullies and the install..We love photo's here man.. :D I found this project to be very simple...I still have two pullies and they are v-belts but if you can make your own that's even better,... :D Good luck I'm happy with it..
