'83 GL1100i Stereo Replacement

Postby chrissvitak » Sun Jul 22, 2012 6:43 pm

I have recently purchased a mint '83 GL1100i. I have searched this site and found nothing that pertains to my request...maybe I am simply looking in the wrong place though.

I would like to replace the OEM Honda Clarion stereo with something a bit more modern that I could hook up an iPod and such to. Does anyone have any information on types of stereos that work well and possibly direction on "how to"? I have attached 2 photos of my fairing and exsisting stereo location. Please keep in mind this one word...simplicity.

Thanks in advance for your help. :D

I too left the radio alone. But I added am amplifier that could play music from an sd card or USB drive. I then added a switch so I could switch the speakers between the radio or the amp. I mounted the amp on that little shelf above the voltmeter. Works much, much, much better than the oem stereo with an fm adapter on the ipod. Oh, when I was using the ipod it kept crashing - Too much vibration. That's why I sent with the usb/sd amp. Similar to this one:
