83 gl1100 interstate starter

Postby pulitjer » Thu Jul 26, 2012 11:44 pm

is an 83 gl1oo interstate starter the same as an 83 aspencade ? i just purchased a starter that said it was for an 83 aspencade and would also fit an 83 interstate. I tried for hours to get it to go in but wouldnt. finally i took out the sprocket that was resting in the starter chain and realized the splined opening wasnt the same diamater. There was no way it would ever fit. Then i proceded to put the new gear, that came with the new starter, in the chain and tried to reinstall the starter , and that wouldnt work either! the new gear was setting way to high. i thought it was slack in the chain so i proceded to try to work that out with no success!.i then removed the gear back out of the chain and compare it to the old gear. suprise!!!! the new gear was a bit bigger , wich made it set up higher in the chain!!! i reinstalled the original starter and gear and it went right in !! I think someone was fibbing to me , what do yall think? buy the way, it is a new aftermarket starter.

This happened before to a nice guy.
He also tried a after market starter and found exactly the same problem with the parts as you have.
If I recall correctly,He just returned it as defective(good luck with that) and bought a OEM starter.
Now,given the idea that your original starter was bad and your "new" one works but doesn't fit,you have 2 choices.
1.the same as above.
2.combine both into one.
use the working motor from the replacement and bolt up the gear reduction head and sprocket from the original that fit.Just clean and grease all the gears and bearings first.

I have an 83 Aspencade and an 82 Interstate. My Aspy had a starter problem so I switched the started from my 82 Interstate to my 83 Aspy. It fit perfectly. After reading your post, I checked a few parts sites and found the same part number listed for 83 Aspy's, 83 Interstates and 82 Interstates and Aspys. The starter you bought most likely will not fit any 2nd generation Wing. I'm not sure if the 1st generation starters are the same or or not. 1984 Wings show a diffrent part number. Good possibility the starter you have is for and 84 Aspy.

If the comutator is electrically sound you can turn the copper area in a lathe and clean the "drooves" test is like the manual says and it will be as good as new. I did that to mine, look like new and worked like new. they are easy to repair, and it is exspected to have to resurface the comutator on a rebuild.
