82 1100 I filled 3 cylinders with gas

Postby lbman » Mon Jul 30, 2012 1:52 pm

Wow what a week end....went to start my bike to go to work friday and battery was dead! 8 volts... charged it over night and next morning bike really struggled to turn over..I noticed a gas smell but it did take off and left a large wet spot (gas smell) under pipe left side...
Yesterday I went to go to the store and it didn't want to turn over again!!! &^#@*)*) I thought but i did see a spark come from starter....(T#$@$&(( so off comes the starter...went through it , re lubed and cleaned it up..sounds great now. but, I did remove left side spark plug....suspicious of the gas smell, well it struggled to turn over and shot gas 10 feet from the back left cylinder....so I removed all the plugs... both the right cylinders were full of gas also....what the heck is this problem? I turned off the gas {which I have never done} and no more gas leak....
Would 3 out of 4 floats all of the sudden stick? been using Union 76 gas NO Methanol. but I did fill it with Meth gas last time. and added Stable for Meth gas...Don't they know METH is as bad for bikes as people.. ;-}
anyway, any thoughts on this would be great..

come on I wanted an EASY answer...
nice to hear from someone from my old stomping grounds...I lived In Lyman for 10 years..1980-1990 . rode Harley s back then...
just have to wonder how 3 out of 4 carbs went to crap overnight (Literally)
I will try to finish out season by turning gas off and running out gas before i turn it off...carb s can take a lot of hours to rebuild and get right. oh well time will tell....
dang the bad luck.
thanks,
LB

Not all that unusual. Especially if you are parking the bike on side stand. The side draft carbs floats will leak gas because they are not smoothly "floating" in the bowls. Even mother Honda recommends turning off gas during shut down. Draining the gas is not necessary since the gas leaks from the tank past the floats. If the pet **** is shut off the only gas that could leak is in the hose and filter and that doesn't happen since no air can get into allow the gas to come down.

As long as it is running good, you will be fine till winter. and you might just get away with an adjustment and a bowl gasket.Randakks stuff is great, but not every carb needs to go all the way evey time.

Could be dirty gas, filter not working well or breaking down and crap got lodged in the float valve seats. Be careful you can bend a rod if cylinders full of gas on start up. Turning the petcock off should solve your issue in the short run.

thanks all for the info.
I really do not want to tear it down now. I will shut off gas after I ride. a quick ride will tell me if a float has sunk and it is flooding all the time.
I have been having a little hesitation on one cylinder lately .... not bad just notice something not perfect. I have been lucky so far..previous owner always used Marvels Mister y Oil in the gas, as well as myself.
but METHANOL is a bad thing !!!! and gas in general ain't what it used to be.
I will check or change the oil tonight. I hate to dump out $50 worth of new oil and a filter. but I won't take a chance....
thanks again.

Problem is a lot more common than you might think. I've experienced it with 2 of my Wings. All the input here is valid, I always shut the fuel off, NOW. Only thing I would add is try some Seafoam the rest of the way it has always worked wonders for me.

I have found that I have no problems as long as I put the bike on the center stand, gas off, and use Seafoam and Yamalube gas conditioner. The bike is almost 30 years old, but runs great: a testament to Honda, and the fact that spending a little more for the additives helps keep everything in good condition given what we have for fuel now days.

This is a problem I had a couple of weeks ago.I thought the float was sticking in my #2,which was overfilling and leaking gas and causing hydrolock.Pulled the rack ,cleaned everything,checked float,reassembled-and it still leaked.
Turned out to be the gas filler cap vents were clogged.I soaked the cap overnight (after removing gasket) in white vinegar.Applied large amounts of carb cleaner and compressed air--problem solved.
Just something you might want to check.Regards, :D Johnyy

I have always turned off the gas when parking my 1100. With the ethanol added the gas is much more able to cause vapor lock on hot days.
I also try and shut off the gas and run the carbs dry, out of gas when I'm parking the bike for more then a day.
You can also get a product named Seafoam and add it to you gas to help clean them while running.
I also suggest sending you carbs to Pistol Pete for rebuild, they will be a bolt up and run for sure when you get them back.

Thanks Chuck,
I will rebuild my own carbs....I have a lot of expertise on those little buggers as well as the big ones.
I'm going to drain them this week end and see of i can figure out what happened ....bad gas is the probable cause. it was running very well for the most part after I synced the carbs last year ...this is one of those all of the sudden kind of things.....during record heat here Mind you.... I will also clean the gas cap and make sure it is not a problem....too many projects going on at once...had to recompose myself a bit.. ;-}
thanks for all the input from the group...helps me to focus and get grounded a bit..
thanks again.

I can rebuild everything, but have given up with carbs. Ethanol and heat, I try and run 89 octane or higher in hot weather.

Good luck
