New Tire time soon 1980 GL1100 Interstate

Postby Wingsconsin » Mon Jul 30, 2012 2:05 pm

As this is a new-to-me bike I am learning everyday about the specs and requirements for it.
Looking it over this weekend while doing the carb sync and a list of other items I noticed it will need new rubber pretty soon (this fall probably).

I believe this following statement to be correct -
1980 & 1981 are different size tires than 1982 & 1983....(Right?)

1980 tire sizes are
Front - 110/90-19
Rear - 130/90-17

With this as my basis of searching I have found only a few tire choices in these sizes.
Currently the bike has Dunlop D404's and they seem pretty good.
I have found replacement D404's at a reasonable price and would not hesitate to use them unless someone said something to the affect that a different brand X would be a better choice?

I seem to find that Bridgestone Spitfires have a correct size as well - I have used these on a CX500 and liked them also, but think the Dunlops may be better for this larger bike?

Your opinions matter - so please share ... 8-)

My tire guy says 404 are all he'll put on the Gls' due to the Gl's weight but many here like the Bridgestones too. Alse the Shinko brand has gotten some good reviews..cheaper too!!! Sorry there are no correct answers for tires is has a lot to do with personal preference and riding style..and location..highway , twisties, city...
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83
NOW INTO 1500'S..RIDING A 1998 SE

FAIR WINDS,

The Shinkos are a great buy on a very good sneaker. I found a good price at Whitney of all places. You have to input size there as their model selection won't show it. Whichever way you go I recommend Dynabeads.

Thanks for the replies --
I am leaning toward the D404's again.
