I tested these LED bulbs

Postby bbells » Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:52 pm

Just thought you guys might be interested in this.
These tower type LED bulbs were pretty inexpensive and advertised to be twice as bright as the regular 1157 tungsten bulbs. Well, I used a light proof cone and my photographic incident meter and discovered the ads aren't quite accurate. Surprise. The running light tested as being the exact same brightness. The brighter part of the light ended up being 1/2 stop dimmer than the tungsten 1157 bulbs. Plus, the tungsten bulbs have a very bright center area that makes them more noticeable.

To clarify, each f/stop on the meter is 2x the light as the f/ before it. So 1/2 f/ isn't 1/2 less light. It is closer to 1/3 less.
Significant when dealing with a brake light, but may be acceptable for a turn signal, etc. I felt comfortable replacing one of the brake light bulbs on my bike with the LED and keeping the other tungsten since I have an aftermarket brake light bar on top of my luggage rack. Picked up a $2 ebay electronic flasher to control the turn signals with the LEDs installed.
