New old second bike

Postby flash2002 » Tue Aug 07, 2012 3:40 pm

Hi guys, Well I got myself a second bike, it's a 1982 GL 1100. It's in not bad shape, needs a bit of work seems to run fine. I do have one question, I was looking on the net at the specs and they show it with a 130/90/17 now on my bike I have a 140/90/16 is this wrong, with the tire this wide the left side of the tire is rubbing on the rod that holds the back caliper in place, is it possible the guy put the wrong tire?

Parts list shows 80-82 with a 17" rear.The 83 has the cast rim and is 16" .
80-82 have the rivited rim, like your front.
Are the rims the same style.?
I think a 83 complete wheel will bolt up(kinda)to a 80-82.

Hi Virgil, yes, both rims are the same style, the problem is, the tire rubbing on the rod that is connected to the back caliper, I thought the tire might be to wide.

I really thought it had a 17" rim.Hmmm.I'll believe anything nowadays.obviously the difference on tire width is 10mm. So one side would be 5mm further away from the rub point.
Is it a interstate,Aspencade or standard.look at the model number.who knows what changes were made over the last 30 years.

I pulled the parts list.this may help.It shows the only bike with a 140 width is the 83.All the others have the 130.

The only one with the wider tire is the 83 model. My 83 didn't have a riveted rim,it was cast.

Me again, I was looking at the parts list from Bike Bandit and it shows the 82 to have a 140/90/16 I dont get it, why would that bar rub on the tire ? I will have to take a closer look at that tomorrow.

Hello
Have you checked the wheel bearings for being worn out and loose?
That would cause contact.

Hi tech 1, I check the bearings theyre ok, everything is strait and in line. what I think it is , is the tire is two large, going to get a 130 instead of a 140.
