VALVE TICKING
My 83 wing has a ticking sound on the right side. Adjusted the valves like the book says, but did not seem to help! Any ideas on what could be making that sound? Thanks..

Hi Kuhlmanp, I dont know if you notice, but the fuel pump is on the right side, is it possible your ticking is comming from there, I know on my bike it ticks .

Re: VALVE TICKING
Also, were you absolutely sure a valve was not sticking open a little bit. Man that could make do that, sticking in a difent spot as it opens and closes.
just a thought and easy to check.

Re: VALVE TICKING
Thanks for the info, will check it out, also I was told it could be a weak valve spring.

Re: VALVE TICKING
A couple of things...My 83 has a little ticking on both sides. It's normal for mechanical valves, however a noticeable difference is not normal.
After replacing the cam and rocker in hopes my right side would quiet down,I finally determined that the chrome fuel pump cover was the culprit.Being bolted direct to the intake bolts,it would act like a bell.
And yes about the valve springs too.Don't forget that the 1100 has 2 springs on each valve.
When I rebuilt mine,I found 3 inner springs broken in half.I never saw them till I pulled the retainer off.
The mechanical fuel pump is a spring loaded lever that rubs on the end of the cam.If the spring is broken,it will cause a tick too.

Re: VALVE TICKING
Thanks for all the good advice, ended up to be a broken inner valve spring. After an afternoon of wrenching, its all better now. Thanks again..
