Water Pump

Postby cjeffers9 » Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:24 pm

I had some water leaking into the oil. Pulled the water pump there is a dent in the big o-ring The bearings seem good alittle wobble, play what ever you want to call it. Should it be solid no play or wobble ? Just trying to save 160 dollars

There should be no wiggle to the pump AT ALL!! If there is it's going bad. AS it gets worse you'll start to have oil and/or water dripping from the weep hole in the bottom of the housing. If real bad the impeller will start to wear on the housing and make noise. Western Honda better pricing or you can get a rebuild kit for $30 from a guy in Holland I have his email. Then are some how to's on a couple of sites..not complicated but it does take some work.

The absolute best 'how to change the water pump' is right here on GoldwingDocs under the DIY.
It's a process but it sounds like you are already half way there.
I've replaced the front cover three times. You want to have a good quality torque wrench!!!

Fit a replacement OEM water pump and gaskets/O rings.
There are two ball race seal bearings in these pumps and once they wear the shaft wobbles- the mechanical seal stops being effective and water leaks out of the weep hole. A previous owner of my machine filled the weep hole up with sealant and when I stripped the pump down it was a mess. I toyed with replacing both the bearings but needed a mechanical seal as well so bought a replacement pump with gasket set. The replacement pump has a metal impellor and the one removed had a brown coloured plastic impellor that fell apart as it had been touching the casing a little.
Hope this helps
