Rear air presure light

Post by hulzm » Sat Mar 06, 2010 9:33 pm

When I reach 25mph the presure light comes on, when I checked the presure the place I bought the bike from had 90psi in the shocks. I set it at 45psi, the light still comes on at 25mph. Is there some type of relay that could be bad, or some kind of reset? Also, as long as there is air in the shocks is it ok to ride with the light on? The bike is a 1982 GL1100 Interstate. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

I had a look at the schematic, and there are only two components that can go bad that would cause this:

The first is the actual switch itself. It has a single light blue wire that runs to it, and the switch grounds this wire when the shock air pressure is too low, which causes the light to come on.

The second is the "control unit." It monitors the switch, as well as the motorcycle speed (through a sensor in the speedometer) and decides when to illuminate the warning light.

I would recommend downloading the 1100 Honda Service Manual from the Manuals page. Starting on page 18-7, you'll find an entire diagnostic process diagram that takes you through the steps of diagnosing exactly the problem you are having.

If there was 90psi in the shocks, expect them to leak soon 57psi max is what the maual says. Over inflating will damage the seals and oil will leak as well.
