82 GL1100I Vibration in handlebar

Postby fireguy » Sun Mar 07, 2010 8:01 am

Need a little help here. I have a vibration that transfers to the throttle grip that causes my hand to go "numb" when I'm out riding. Others have told me that it might be the bearings in the triple trees. I've checked that out and the "trees" have no play and the action seems to be smooth with out any signs of being "notchy" at all. Vibration remains , even after replacing the front tire. I installed a throttle rocker and that has helped. (cause I'm not holding the grip the same) but the vibration is still there.

I have to replace the rear tire this season...could the vibration be transffering from the rear tire?

Would appreciate any help....don't need to be any more "numb" than I am normally!

Is it engine type (high frequency) vibration (like humming, changes with engine RPM), tire (mid frequency) type vibration (like a quick banging, changes with speed), or steering type vibration (low frequency, handlebars moving back and forth)?

He may have a high frequency vibe somewhere if his bars are buzzing. You can quiet them down with a product called Bar Snake, but I would go looking for the source; these engines are not normally buzzy.

It must be a high frequency vibration. I don't think it comes from engine , cause when I'm on the highway and grab the clutch and coast it doesn't seem to change as the engine idles down. Could it be the universal in the shaft drive? Wheels, I'm guessing are ok, cause the vibration has not changed with the last few tire changes. I do have a slight "cupping" on the rear tire, but just on the left side of the tire. Last mechanic that looked at the tire says that is normal wear from the "crown " in the road.

I sure would like to track it down. And fix it where ever it may be.
