1980 GL1100 I - Clutch Confusion Questions

Postby Wingsconsin » Tue Aug 21, 2012 1:10 pm

I DO NOT have a manual (yet) - it's on the way, but I would look this over ASAP if I can get some clarification from the experienced members here..

My understandings are :

1)The 1980 (1981?) Clutch adjustment is capable through the clutch cover whereas the '82 & '83 are not adjustable this way..?

2) Once inside the cover - by removing the access port cover - there is another adjuster bolt inside that...does something..? By turning it in a direction..? (This is where your experience helps)

3) I know there is some adjustment on the cable (new one installed already) at the lever and at the lower end. However this seems to be more of a fine tune while the other may be more direct adjustment..?

Pictures are very helpful....? :?

For now - sign me -
Grateful for your guidance.

Still not getting it just right...

Here's what I did -
1)I loosened the lock nut at the handlebar clutch lever and screwed it all the way IN (as per instructions)
2) I opened the clutch inspection cover - loosened the locking nut - turned the adjustment all the way IN to SNUG - then back out 3/4 turn.
3) I adjusted the lower locking nuts (at the bottom right hand side) to the lowest point

The clutch lever then was unable to draw tight...So I adjusted the lower attachment to the highest point and the lever was able to draw tight but the clutch friction point is almost all the way OUT with the lever...?

And it is still QUITE hard to PULL ...

New cable - INSTALLED so it's not the cable...

I think :?: I need to have the lower end adjustment point loose when I adjust the internal screw..so I will try that when I re-do it (tonight?)....

ANY thoughts on WHY it is SO HARD to pull...?
I found another GL1100 at bike night last night and the clutch was pretty easy to pull as compared to mine....

I hope I didn't buy a major problem here.....

well it is hard to say what "hard to pull" really is. to some it might be fine and others too hard. does it pull smoothly, if so, be thank ful for a good strong clutch. You will need it with ALL that POWER.

Smooth -- YES .

I need to get it adjusted correctly as it right now engages near the end of the the lever movement (out)..But it works just fine...no slipping, no chatter, no weird stuff..just being a worry wart I suppose...My other Goldwings have been a 1200 and a 1500 with hydraulic clutch action so it feels a lot different to me...I am pleasantly surprised at how STRONG the 1100 is and the low gearing of the 1980 makes it a pretty quick machine...(keeps up with the 1500) ...

UPDATE -
I had the time to adjust again the clutch by going inside the rear clutch cover through the access port. I believe this is only on the '80 &'81 models not the '82 & '83. There is a lock nut with an adjusting screw and the procedure requires you to loosen the locknut, tighten the screw all the way then turn back 3/4 turn - then reverse procedure to reassemble.

The adjustments on the handle and at the lower end are loose during this procedure and then you adjust from there. In the manual it talks about a hard to pull clutch requiring a lifter pin R&R that is inside the clutch cover. I did not do this as I did not want to remove this cover (yet) but that seems to be the problem..I will monitor this situation as time passes.

The recent adjustment DID move the engagement point closer to the bar rather than all the way out so there was SOME merit to doing it, as well as it is a tiny bit easier to do now...but winter may see me taking off the clutch cover...

If anyone wants to tackle this - read the manual(s) --I am sorry I did not take pictures... :P
