Speedo died What i do? `82 1100 S

Postby goldminerusa » Wed Aug 22, 2012 7:58 am

Last friday i removed the front wheel for a tire change and after replacing the wheel went out for a cruise, nothing like a new front tire, saw Officer Oboy up ahead and glanced at the speedometer, speedometer isn`t working. ?? Stopped shortly after, checked cable, drive box, seems okay. Before re-installing the wheel i cleaned all the old grease out of the drive gear box and replaced with new hi temp wheel bearing grease and WD40`d the cable, made sure the box tab was behind the tube tab before tightening / torquing all the nuts. Made sure the cable engaged the drive box then tighten cable at the speedo head. Did i miss something here? i`ve done wheel changes many times and never with a problem. Any and all ideas appreciated. Thanks

cant think of anything offhand.however wd40 is a solvent not a lube.you need to relube that cable with oil or light grease

I'd start at the wheel.pull the cable off and verify the gearbox turns with the wheel first.
From there it is coupled direct to the spedo.
If the outer metal coupler has slipped on the outer cable, it may have effectively lengthened the cable and the inner coupler just dosen't connect to the gearbox all the way.
My 1100 did this.I used a propane torch and warmed the crimped coupler and pushed it back on the cable almost 1/2".

Take pictures and let us know what you find.
You could even post a How-To fix a dead spedo. :D

Turns out the 4 tabbed washer like plate behind the dust seal is FUBAR, the inner tabs are broken and gone and the plate itself badly warped. Ordered a new one with seal. Don`t see how replacing the grease and tire could cause this. Sorry, no pictures, can fix or repair daily but use a digital camera and post pics is well beyond my abilities. Virgilmobile, the cable ferrule is very slightly loose but not enough to repair, yet! Good Tip. As to a how-to, maybe one on how to repair a wiring harness, the whole enchilada including switch`s, I did 3 of them for this bike. Thanks again.

When I R and R'ed my front wheel, I lost my speedo also. When I checked out why... I found the little brass tab that mates to the cable had broke. I could see it spinning but it was not locking into the cable slot. Quick fix....bought a new drive gear. Hope this helps.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle :)

Garmin NUVI 50 it mounts to windshield (with suction cup) but I have it mounted to dash with bolt. it is removable and is water proof (lets say I live in FL and my bike is always outside and I never take GPS off and its still working)
