1981 GL1100 not running

Postby rabbit » Wed Mar 10, 2010 12:05 am

Hey,

I recently purchased a 1981 GL1100, it was delivered to me by the owner and it was running. I continued to go out each day and start the bike until one day it stopped starting. I replaced the starter solenoid and that seemed to work but a week later the bike stopped running again. I checked the battery, it was bad, purchased a new battery and it's fully charged but the bike won't start, now and the solenoid has stopped clicking. The bike also had some bad fuel in the reserve tank, but I believe I have purged all of the bad fuel. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated, as this is my first bike and so far, I have not been able to get it running again. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Have you checked the master (dogbone) fuse? When it fails, it often fails intermittently. That master fuse is made of thin metal, and is right next to the solenoid. They tend to crack as they get old, and when they do crack, they can cause flaky operation like this. Most people replace them with a waterproof fuse holder like this one:

That way you can just plug a regular car "blade" 30 amp fuse into it and not worry about it ever again. I was stranded once because my old "dogbone" fuse cracked and failed. That was the last time THAT ever happened.

When I bought the replacement solenoid, it already had the 30amp fuse in it, so yes, that has been replaced, as well. I guess my frustration lies in where do I go from here?? I have the bike torn apart and feel like I haven't made any progress and I don't want to nickel and dime myself into the poor house, but I also want to get it running again. It ran just fine for 5 or 6 days and then all of a sudden, it died and wouldn't restart. Thanks again for any help.

Well if the solenoid is not clicking, then the problem is electrical - which is good, because it's a bit easier (at least to me) to diagnose. Just follow the power. Is there power getting out of the ignition switch? Is there power getting to the starter button? Is there power coming out of the starter button? Is there power getting to the solenoid? Is there power getting from the solenoid to the starter?

Basically follow the power path from the battery, along the path of the starting system. When you find the point where the power doesn't exist where it should, you've isolated your problem.

Wingadmin has the best diagnosis just to add a little to it on the older bikes (and new ones) while checking for voltage also check for green corrosion at the connectors as this will cause a voltage drop at the starter and not allow it to turn over
