Gl1100 1983 standard with Hondaline saddlebags and trunk

Postby Jose Fuste » Tue Sep 04, 2012 3:45 pm

I have this restored GL1100 1983 . When new , we purchased the then available Hondaline kit for saddlebags and trunk which included the saddlebags ,the trunk and the chrome frame where the bags and trunk are attached.
The two arms that hold the trunk and that allow it to move front and aft ,metal fatigued and the left one broke in two and the right one cracked.
Anyone happens to have such brackets (arms) or the frame assembly?
I can send photos by email if you think that will help. Any assistance will be appreciated . Thanks.

Maybe you could get some aluminum or steel rod to fit inside the broken tubes and weld the broken ends closed. Or. Get larger tubing and fit them over the broken tubes and then weld. Just a thought. Good luck.

I've done exactly that before to fix a broken chromed tube. I couldn't weld it, because it would destroy/discolor the chrome.

Instead, I took a piece of steel rod and milled it down until it fit fairly tightly inside the broken tube (I couldn't find one that fit well enough, so I had to do this - you might be able to find some steel rod that fit better). I then used a wire brush to clean the inside of the chromed tube, followed by degreaser (my old standby, brake cleaner). I did the same to the steel rod. I mixed up some J-B Weld, liberally coated both the inside of the chromed tube and the steel rod, pushed the steel rod into the tube, then clamped the chromed tube in place. A small bit of J-B Weld squeezed out when it was initially clamped, so I cleaned that away. Once the J-B Weld cured, the repair was solid, almost invisible, and it never broke again. With the steel rod reinforcement inside, I'm sure it was stronger than it was originally.

If you have not found the part you are looking for let me know. I have the chrome rack the trunk mounts on, if that is what you are looking for. It came off an '82 Interstate. In excellent condition. $25.00 plus actual shipping costs. Send me a PM if you are interested, also have the chrome side bag/luggage mounts - racks as well.
