wrong reading fuel gauge

Postby goldminerusa » Wed Sep 05, 2012 6:21 am

A while back i asked how to fix the fuel sender to correct for wrong reading and was told by, RBGERSON ?, not to bend the arm but wash the coil in 50/50 muriatic acid and water. I did that repair this past weekend and it worked great, 1 oz. water to 1oz. acid and an old toothbrush, took longer to remove and install sender than to clean. solved the problem. Thanks

Excellent! Years of fuel deposits on the coil will add resistance and cause incorrect readings. Removing those deposits allows the power to flow correctly, and the gauge to read accurately again.

I have this problem on the GL1100 I - The fuel reads 1/2 full when I KNOW it is full to the brim.
This is on the "to do" list but way down the priority chain at this point..still have a reserve so knowing about whe the fuel runs out is good enough for now....maybe winter work... :?:

As long as your temperature gauge is also not reading low - if it is, it's probably the 7 volt regulator. If the temp gauge operates normally, then go after the sender.

Temp gauge is accurate. Fuel gauge is wonky.
I am just reluctant to remove the fuel sending unit from the tank to clean it.
It is not a big deal right now, an dthere are other things that require attention, time, energy, and money.... :?
