Information and questions on GL1100 Goldwings (1980-1983)

Hi, I have a 1981 GL1100. I am wanting to make it into a bike that I can trust on long trips, and for a long time. I feel good about the engine...I replaced the timing belts and I am going to rebuild the card this winter and install new timing belt tensioners. My concern is the ignition components. It looks like I can get new coils and maybe even spark units, but not a pulse generator. Anyway, my real questions are can I change this to an all new system...like a Dyna or what ever, and if so what would the steps be? Thanks, for any help you can give me.

If your bike is running good and she will go up over 80 mph on the highway then I wouldn't worry too much with the PG, the spark advancer is doing its Job if you are hitting on all four cylinders, best way to see if your ignition components are working fine is by using a timing light...If your bike is running aweful and backfiring and being difficult then you might want to inspect the PG...pull the swingarm, shaft..it's a real pain ..If you check the timing and your marks are spot on you need not to worry, go on your long trip...I don't know about a dyna...I think those are used mostly on 1000's I could be wrong...
