What's under your paint?

Postby BigSwede » Mon Sep 10, 2012 11:47 am

Started down the long road to a repaint, sanded down the right side cover saturday. After a few layers of paint, came upon this:

So many layers of paint on this thing, gotta find a faster way than sanding!

I think I moved the process along wet sanding with like 400 grit, then I went to a 800 grit and then 1000 grit before I put down any primer, light coats on the primer then I sanded it real nice and be sure you get all the dust off well before you start putting paint down...Never paint when it's raining out or if the temps are too cool...Foggy stuff will happen...Yet it takes a lot of time anyway you look at it..

I finally got that panel down to the plastic, took a couple hours wet sanding with 150, I think it's been painted 3 times, at one point thought i was down to plastic, there was still paint, primer, a layer of body filler over the whole thing then another layer of paint! I'm going to look into taking all the painted parts somewhere to be soda blasted. I tried easy off oven cleaner, didn't do anything.

Since I've "nakedized" it except for the saddlebags, at leasty I don't have to do the fairing or trunk!

I'm probably going to buy used fenders for it, mine have had multiple holes drilled in them. I'll get ones with only original factory paint. That way I don't feel the need to take them down to bare metal/plastic.

Well now you know why it was painted, but why wouldn't that have been sanded off before?

If you aren't having fun doing it, find something else to do.

I haven't yet, I may go with the satin black I painted the saddlebag lids (they were white when I got the bike) or blue, or I may go nuts and do it in yellow, like this:

73 Dart Sport 340 I had many years ago
