Gas Leak Intermit

Postby kaao » Wed Sep 12, 2012 4:11 pm

I started my 82 GL1100I the other day & found a leak coming from under the left sidecarb/linkage area, Not just a drip but steady flow, shut it down, too dark & late to dig into it then. Today, I took off the trim, tank, etc. to get a good look & got nothing. I tried fiddling around the hoses, linkage & still no leaks. Wondering if anyone ran into this on their GW, hate to be one the road & she gets pissy again. The leak stopped when I shut down the Bike, thinking maybe a filter, hose, gasket, pump related stuff. Also there's a screw wheel under the carb, wondering if it's for idle? seems to be broken, stripped out, Any thoughts appreciated. Mahalo's.

Probably a stuck float that made itself un-stuck in the time you waited. It's supposed to stream the fuel overboard if a float valve sticks open, otherwise it would overflow into the engine, and could hydrolock a cylinder - which could cause major engine damage.

Run some Seafoam through your fuel, and cross your fingers that clears it up.

UNDER the carb the only "screw" is the drain plug..if stripped it could leak gas, if you have a bad blow gasket and the float got stuck gas could leak around the bowl gasket as it over filled. Cracked filter or hose?

Thanks all, Screw is stripped out, & just fell out, not from there. Good to know info, it sat a couple weeks when I 1st noticed the prob. I'll keep an eye on it & yeah Seafoam has been my best friend lately. :)

This sounds like my problem. I dont know where to start. Rmove tank? Would I pull the carberater off? It's leaking, only when running, right side carb in the back. I just see it dropping off a screw on the bottom.

Screw at the bottom of the carb bowl is the drain..and there is a o ring on it..could be loose or bad o ring? take the screw out replace o ring and re insert..or fuel could be running down the bowl from a bad bowl gasket..which has a bad float setting or stuck float..so over filling..wipe it down to dry and "spray" some corn starch or flour around see if there is trail of wet will ID the leak if not from drain..

Thx! I'll look at that tonight. Is that job to fix float doable? Or send it to the shop? I don't like going to the shop.
