how to pull motor 1982 gs 1100I

Postby ridingonstilts » Mon Sep 17, 2012 11:27 am

have already removed, floorboards[front and rear],all bags, crash bars, trailer hitch, rear rap lights. side covers, battery. What next? :?:I know this is huge project for us,but my wife lost her legs, and can no longer ride our harley comfortably. WE bought this 1982 1100 with 18000 miles on it off ebay. it starts, runs good, but doesn't charge the battery.no melted wires on plug for stator. was told probably bad stator. may have jumped the gun on pulling motor. please any help appreciated?? Very limited budget. thank you... walking on stilts

you should test the stator to know if it is good or bad.
Continuity between each pair of yellow wires is good ( no continuity to ground from any yellow wire)
disconnect the wires and test.( is the connector replaced)

no. the bike was kept indoors for its [parked] life. 18000 miles. very good stock shape. The seller did however tell me, [ after purchase ] he had charger on battery all night, but still turned over weak, so he jump started it with his pick up.I've heard that this will fry the stator.I will however ck.continuity in the morn.

continuity appears good. plug looks good. the other plug [four wires] however is gone, wires are twisted together [ a cheap connect ] ,and individually taped.[elec tape] is this acceptable

A well documented common fault happens with the charging cirucits on these machines. There is a three pin connector in the alternator output 3 wires near the fuel tap that often gets corroded and results in poor battery charging. Most cures seem to be removing the yellow connector and soldering the wires thus eliminating the three pin connector. I strongly recommend that you download the free GL1100 maintenance manual on this website that includes all aspects of the goldwing manitenance including a section on the charging ciricuit.
Try that before ripping the engine out

Scroll up to the top of this page and you will see an icon "Manuals" click that and open the GL1100 manauls and you will find what you are looking for. This website is really great and very helpful and is well organised by Wingadmin
