air filter fit

Postby aznyaz » Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:38 am

I have a K & N filter in my bike and noticed that it doesn't seem to hit the bottom of the filter enclosure. The top of the filter bottoms out on the inverted "V" shaped metal that holds the threaded rod that the hold down nut screws into. Is it possible that the K & N is not as tall as the OEM filter?

I can't say as I haven't used a K&N, but if it is not being pressed securely against the bottom of the filter enclosure, then your engine is sucking unfiltered air - and that's really not good for it, particularly in dusty conditions.

It's hard to tell but it appears to just miss sitting on the bottom of the filter housing. I'm going to check the height of the filter I've got and compare it to the OEM measurements. I think I read something to the effect that the height is supposed to be 3.688".

Well, maybe this filter should have had a gasket because there doesn't seem to be any way the bottom could seal up against the air box. So, I just improvised my own gasket until I can get the right one or a filter that has the gasket attached. Does anyone know where I could find a gasket for this application?
