81 GL1100i looking for saddle/ seat options

Postby scotterichmond » Thu Sep 27, 2012 2:39 pm

Not much out there new , for the GL1100. saddleman is what I find, and I am not too pleased with the one I got for my 75 GL1000, it is way too hard.
So, what can you guys add the the mix? I want soft and cushy for the misses.

I'm going through the same thing.Every seat I've tried gets me sore in 2 hours.
It was the same on the 1100,1200 and now on the 1500.
I tried everything on top.
The sheep's wool keeps a good temp but the pressure is not being distributed well and either the tail bone or butt bone kills me.
Last week I tried the $150 AirHawk seat...The butt pressure was distributed better but it increased the tail bone pressure badly.
My next attempt will be to remove 2 inches of the foam and couture it to fit the cheeks and remove a section from the center rear.I'm gonna use 2@ 1" thick latex foam pads, you know,Kneeling pads or the Walmart black/camo seat cushions,$5 each, and fit them into the seat area.
I'll take pix along the way.
I just find the seat hard and flat.My butt is not ...so I'll make the seat to match it. :D

I wish I could get a GL1200 seat to fit, there are more choices for them. Is there a lot of difference between them? I wonder how much is involve to make one fit?

I tried a gel pad too. While it distributed the butt bone weight,it added pressure to the tail bone area.
My arse felt better but by tail bone killed my back. That's why I'm gonna make a cutout for that problem.
It's gonna end up being a orthopedic custom seat I'm afraid .
With a little luck,it will all cover up with the original material and look the same, just sculptured inside for that "fit like a glove" effect

ON my 1500 I have a Diamond Custom seat and LOVE IT...
I have had it recovered by them once (and it will be again) but I have sat on it for close to 80,000 miles..It is big, wide, deep, and soft....It fits me better than any chair I own in my house ... But it will cost you...

The GL1100 I we have (my sons new-to-him bike) has a Russell Day long saddle on it...He really likes it...he is also 100 lbs smaller than me...I can ride on it and it seems fine but I wish it were deeper...Another custom seat for $$....

Both of these came with the rides when we bought them so I have never had to make this choice but I thought perhaps my opinions may help..if you need pictures of them..let me know....Backrests installed in both..

Diamond Custom Seats -- http://www.diamondseats.com/hondagl1100.htm

Here is a picture of when I got it back from the recover -
This one is for my GL1500 ...

Deep wide bucket with wide backrest for all day cruising.

Russell day long website -- http://www.day-long.com/

You can get a decent look at the Day long on the 1100...

What I do not like on the Day long is the seat itself is not very deep (front to rear) for the driver...but my son says it is fine for him ( 19 years old and in good shape not old & fat like me)
The back rest is excellent - the width at the rear is nice...

ANY custom seat will require 1000 miles to break in ..and it is quite an expense if you choose poorly....talk to them and get their opinions on how to build a seat for you...

If you want more pictures, measurements ,etc, I can ge tthem organized for you over the weekend..I will lay a tape measure on the seats and take a pic ...maybe sit on it too and get a picture for comparisons...whatever I can do to help you make a choice that you wil not regret...

The GL1100 ..? The Color is Chevy Cobalt Blue custom painted over Gold. The stripes are PAINT under the BLUE under several coats of clear...the previous owner did it right as far as looks goes..the recent maintenance schedule was a bit lacking, but I am working my way through that.

The Diamond seat colors is...? They sent me swatches in the mail before I had it done, and picked one....It matches up nicely to my '96 Pearl Blue 1500...

Seat Pictures ..
The BLUE one is the Diamond on the 1500
Cloth velour with about 40,000 miles sine the recover so it is starting to wear.
The Black on is the Russell on the 1100 . Leather. Miles unknown but is good shape
I am a big guy at 6' and 300#
Bith seats are about 17" wide at the back near the back rest
Russell back rest is adjustable both front to back and height (really nice)
Main difference is depth front to back....Diamond is 18" - Russell is more like 14"

after trying 3 different seats of which all were comfortable to me.the misses hated them.finally settled on a russell daylong on our 82 aspencade gl1100.the passenger seat is the widest we tried so its not spreading her bones out either side.it also has steel support ribs on either side which keep sides from breaking down.they are on line but pricey.but for us after buying the first 3 it would have been cheap to start with
1975 Honda sl360,1977 honda cb550k, 1980 honda cx500d, 1982 honda gl1100a, 1982 suzuki gs450l, 1983 suzuki gs850l,1981 suzuki gs1000g,and 3,1970s Yamaha dirt bikes: these I still have. sold lots through the years but these all still do something for me

It seems the Russell Daylong Leather with backrest will be up for sale.
Leather seat & backrest with pouch and rain covers included
The boy bought a Saddleman Road Sofa for his ride last week...
Any interested parties can send me a PM for details while we await the new seat...
Pricing will be negotiable ... a new one like this would cost close to $995 but of course this is used so the price will reflect a significant discount.....Offers...?
