"83 GL1100A question

Post by jjcain1945 » Fri Sep 28, 2012 9:27 pm

The zerk fitting on the top of rear end drive shaft--what is frequency of it needing grease and is it a special grease? Also machine has 78K on it runs like a top, the rubber seals around the timing belt covers have a little give if you push with a fingernail making me think timing belts were probably changed in the not to distant past. Is this a logical assumption? My Clymer manual doesn't do a good job RE; the GL1100A. Any info appreciated!!

Assume nothing about the timing belts.Unless you can personally vouch that the belts have low miles on them,I and everybody else recommends replacing them.
It takes a couple of hours and usually less than$50. DIY
As far as the grease zerk, forget. about it.
It's poorly placed and really doesn't provide grease where it's needed.Inside the drive shaft coupler.
Every time I put on a new tire,I remove the drive shaft, clean it and apply a copious amount of Molly grease to the splines.
Also when I change the tire,I put in 2oz. of ceramic balancing beads.
I don't lead weight balance tires anymore on anything I drive.

Replace the belts! I just got mine on sale for $40 shipped! It took about 2 hours and now I know my engine is safe!
