Need Starter Help!

Postby portugeezer » Sat Sep 29, 2012 10:02 am

So I removed and cleaned my starter. One of the brush springs was not springy anymore. I took a brush out of my extra GL1000 starter and installed it along with the spring. Off the bike the starter works fine. When I put it in it just zings and doesn't turn the engine. I took it out and put it back in at least 12 times now. Sometimes it will crank the engine for a few seconds then it zings again and stays that way! I'm really at my wits end with this bike! Every time I think I have it going it develops some new issue! I also suspect a bad float or a faulty needle on carb 4. If gas gets in there will it make the starter unable to turn the engine?

It sounds like you've got a sticky sprag on your starter clutch. The sprags on the sprag clutch that connect the starter to the crank are in a place that receives poor oil flow. As a result, sludge can build up in the area, preventing the sprags from properly engaging. The result is the starter will spin the clutch freely, but it won't crank the engine - sometimes.

There's two ways of fixing this.

1. Change the engine oil (while the engine is still warm). Add half a can of Seafoam to the crankcase. Start and ride the bike for a good hour or two. Change the engine oil again. The Seafoam can dissolve the sludge, and it will come out with the oil. This more often than not fixes the problem.

2. Remove the engine, separate the crankcase halves, remove the sprag clutch and clean it by hand. I recommend you try #1 first. :)

Really? Do the Seafoam treatment, Get a couple friends to help push start it, and let it run for an hour. Chances are it will fix your problem.

Actually after reading a post by Virgilmobile on another thread I figured out that I had fuel in 2 and 4. I got that out and it started right up. For now I'm just shutting the fuel off when I shut the bike off. On the plus side my starter is working like new!

Does the carb overflow? My no 3 was leaking-turned out the gas cap vents were clogged. I soaked it in white vinager overnight. Then used large amounts of compressed air and wd-40. No more leak. Just a thought.Regards,Johnyy

OK, so the engine WAS turning over - I was under the impression that the starter was spinning, but the engine was not cranking.

I suspect that it was hydrolocked and the starter clutch was also slipping under the locked condition...
still need to Sea foam it to clean the insides up..

This is step one...Sea foam the fuel too...hydrolock from a short setting indicates a leaking float valve.
A "once in a great while" happens to us all.....
