Engine cutting out, Help!

Postby wingerbanjo » Sun Oct 07, 2012 11:22 am

My 1980 gl1100 recently started missing badly while I was on the interstate at around 70 MPH. It felt like 2 of the cylinders cut out. When I got off the interstate, the problem cleared up and the engine began to run normally again. The problem has popped up on and off several times over the last few weeks. I checked the sock filter in the tank and it appears clean. I have a fuel filter ordered and will replace it next.I ran several doses of seafoam but it didn't help. My "guess" is that my fuel pump is going out. I hope it is that and not something in the carbs. I bought the bike 4 months ago and haven't sync'd the carbs yet. I know the previous owner never did, but this is a new problem. Looking for advice and I thank you all in advance. Joe

More often than not, engine being starved of fuel on the highway but operating normally otherwise is fuel filter related. It CAN be caused by a fuel pump going, where it can't deliver the volume required, but most people find a new filter takes care of the problem. Let us know how it works out for you!
