1983 Gl1100 pops out of gear

Postby dan hefta » Mon Oct 08, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi all,

I have a 1983 Gl1100 and have been riding the crap out of it... 4800 miles this summer... Lately, once in a while she will pop out of 4th gear and it acts like it's in nuetral (weird) and I bump it back in and all is well... Is there a major issue that I should be aware of?

By the way I did install a heal toe shifter earlier this summer, I have plenty of play in the shifter and I don't think that is the problem.

Usually that's due to it not being pushed all the way into gear - I know on my 1100, with a heel/toe shifter, if I got lazy on the shifter and didn't push it hard enough, that could happen.

It can also happen from worn shifters/dogs, which can result from resting your foot on the shifter while riding.

That's what I was thinking... I don't ride the shifter at all, my foot goes right back to the floorboard... Is it weird that it goes into nuetral and not 3rd or 5th?

I find that also if I do a lazy shift, fourth will pop out to nuetral since you have already shifted from third. I find when I make a solid lift up it never happens. Hope this helps. Bob :)

Right, it's not actually in neutral where the neutral light lights up, it is just out of one gear and not in the other - so the same effect, basically. The input shaft isn't connected to the output shaft.

And be very careful when you re-shift into gear, that the RPMs are not too high

Try to match the engine RPM to the bike's speed, the idea is to not grind the dogs once you do get them back in gear.
