Fairing removal?? Illustration? Video?

Postby robertdawber » Mon Mar 15, 2010 7:53 pm

So, I decided to really clean, paint, change old wiring on my 83 interstate. Anyone have a good description of how to take the fairing off?

I believe there is a manual on the forum of the fairing. DL it before it's gone (if it's still there).

That manual they allowed us to keep. If you visit the Manuals page, you'll find it listed in the 1100 Service Manual section:

Honda Goldwing GL1100 Hondaline Fairing Install

The fairing itself isn't that hard to remove - it's all the wiring that makes it a little difficult. I dread removing mine, because I've added so much more wiring of my own.

P downloaded that some time back-WHat exactly needs to come off? I read someplace tht only about 12 nuts and bolts needs to come out.

The wiring in the left pocket needs to be disconnected, and the ends threaded out through the hole. Then yes, it is only a few nuts and bolts that come off, and the entire fairing just lifts up and away.

OK-
For clarification and to ease my mind-
I see the 4 bolts on the "U" bracket

What are the others??
Thanks for your help!

Well, the guy who owned this before me was a nut-wires everywhere with no clean connections...
So, I got the top off-easy enough once the wires are out of the way.
Future folks should take note to disconnect the bike wire harness as it will grab the fairing and act as though you missed a nut or bolt.
Now that it is off-how do you open it to get at things like the headlight, radio, etc.?

You can't open it - it's one solid piece.

The headlight comes out without having to remove the fairing. You remove the set screw in the height adjustment knob, pull the knob off, remove the bolt and washer on the knob shaft, then pull the headlight out the front of the fairing.

The radios are removed also without removing the fairing, by removing the left and right pockets, removing the turn signal lights, and reaching in with small hands and small tools.
