Need Confirmation on forks...ASAP!!!

Postby Mortal-n-Life » Wed Oct 10, 2012 9:27 pm

Working with 82 1100GLA...forks are badly pitted, rusted, and leaking. I've read through the fork rebuilds, JB weld patching and have ultimately decided to replace the forks altogether.

I have found a cheap but fairly decent pair of 82 forks off of an Interstate. Manual says the Asp forks are different from Standard and Interstate but online dealer parts references say that the Asp fork assembly was discontinued and replaced with Standard and Interstate fork assembly.

So which is it? Can I use the 82 Interstate forks on my 82 Aspencade?

Any help please.

The upper tubes should be the same from 80 to 82. the 83 had the anti dive front end,but could be swapped out as a complete set (uppers and lowers together) 8-)

Did the aspy have a different mounting , because of the dual pistons?

Comparing pictures (only), my set and the Interstate set "look" the same. The guy took dimensions for me which match up with 39mm. I purchased the whole set (upper and lower)...starting to second guess but better to be aware than dead. Thanks for the heads up scotterichmond

A post by Silicon Sam over on Goldwing Facts: The '83 calipers, in the same family as your GL1100 (refering to some guy's 82 1100 Aspy) are also dual piston caliper, but the '83 has linked brakes, and the pistons are different sizes from left to right... The '82 has the normal braking system, and the pistons are the same size on both sides. The brakes are one of the items on the GL1100 that almost changed from year to year. '81-'82 and '83 are all different from each other. http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/2-g ... rakes.html

83 front end on an earlier bike is a popular upgrade, just undo the the pinchbolts on the triple trees and slide out both forks . Slip in the 83's and tighten the pinch bolts. now you have an anti dive front end, dual piston calipers and you know that the aluminum mag wheels from the 83 while bolt right in with no issues. The Aspencade has the vented rotors as well, they are thicker that those on the interstate and standard.
The 82 Aspencade uppers are 39mm and will fit into the 80-82 std and Interstate lowers , that way you dont have to change your calipers and/or rotors . 8-)
